Cindy Sherman (Untitled Film Stills)

The Cindy Sherman retrospective has moved from the New York Museum of Modern Art to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where it held the opening party last night. Ms. Sherman’s work has exerted a strong influence on me; viewer, subject, object and gaze all inhabit her in ways which are both funny and deeply unsettling. Not surprisingly, my favorite series is her Untitled Film Series – (self)-portraits of Hollywood female stereotypes in domestic, mysterious, and other narrative settings. The portraits jog the collective Hollywood memory (is it Hitchcock? Kelly? Ida Lupino?) and challenge the patriarchal gaze. Also: they’re simply beautiful.

Cindy Sherman is currently at the SFMoMA through 8th October.
