La Biennale de Venezia 2011: 68

Be still my beating heart: one of my favorite auteurs, the wild and wonderful Abel Ferrara, is premiering 4:44 A Last Day on Earth, staring the wild and wonderful Willem Dafoe. If I were in Venice this year, this would be my first viewing. Second would be Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy: not my favorite John Le Carre novel, but with John Hurt, Gary Oldman, and Colin Firth in it…

The meat of the festival, however, would be the selection of films under Contracampo Italiano. Italy’s golden age of cinema might have passed, but there’s no doubt that the Italians still have that ability to capture the beauty of and in cinema, regardless of genre or format.

The Mostra Internationale D’Arte Cinematografica runs through 10th September.
